Maredsous Abbey, or Abbaye de Maredsous in French, is a Benedictine monastery located in Anhée, Wallonia, Belgium. This abbey serves as a founding member of the Annunciation Congregation within the Benedictine Confederation.
The history of the abbey began on 15 November 1872 when Beuron Abbey founded it as a priory. The Desclée family significantly contributed by donating land and financing the construction. Jean-Baptiste Bethune designed the impressive buildings that still stand today.
In 1878, Pope Leo XIII elevated the priory to the status of an abbey. This promotion allowed the abbey to join the Congregation of Beuron. Later, in 1920, it affiliated with the Congregation of the Annunciation within the Benedictine Confederation. Furthermore, on 12 October 1926, Pope Pius XI awarded the abbey church the title of minor basilica through a pontifical letter.
Maredsous Abbey is famous for producing various cheeses from its own dairy. Visitors enjoy the rich flavors of these traditional cheeses, which highlight the abbey’s culinary heritage. Interestingly, Maredsous Beer, once brewed at the abbey, is no longer made there. Instead, the Duvel Moortgat brewery in Flanders now brews and supplies this popular beer.
