Conception Abbey is a Benedictine monastery in Conception, Missouri. Swiss monks from Engelberg Abbey founded it in 1873. Since then, the community has grown in faith and service. In 1876, the monastery became a conventual priory. Later, in 1881, it advanced to full abbey status. These early changes marked important steps in its mission.
The monks live by the Rule of Saint Benedict. They focus on prayer, study, and work. However, their mission also includes outreach and education. As of 2021, 58 monks called Conception Abbey home. Each monk brings his gifts to the life of the community.
The monks serve in many ways. For example, they operate Conception Seminary College. This college forms men for the Catholic priesthood. It blends academics, prayer, and daily discipline. In addition, the monks run the Printery House. This business produces religious cards, artwork, and gifts. As a result, their creative work reaches homes and parishes across the country.
Moreover, the abbey welcomes guests seeking spiritual renewal. Through the Abbey Guest Center, visitors find peace, quiet, and hospitality. Many guests return year after year. Meanwhile, the monks offer a calm, prayerful space for reflection.
Some monks also serve outside the abbey. They work in parishes, schools, and missions. Most assist within the Diocese of Kansas City–Saint Joseph. Others serve in distant ministries. Regardless of location, their lives reflect Benedictine values.
Therefore, Conception Abbey continues to thrive. It honors its Swiss roots and meets today’s needs. While rooted in tradition, the monks remain open to growth. They pray together, serve others, and build lasting community. Above all, they seek God in everything they do.
