The Basilica of St. Gerard Majella (Portuguese: Basílica de São Geraldo Magela), also called the Basilica of Curvelo, is a Catholic church in Curvelo, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Dutch Redemptorist missionaries built it in 1906, and it remains the only basilica in the world dedicated to St. Gerard Majella.
After the saint’s canonization in 1904, Fathers Tiago Boomaars and Joseph Goosens, with Brother Philip Winter, worked to spread his devotion. Soon afterward, on September 18, 1906, they arrived in Curvelo and settled near the Church of the Rosary. There, they founded a small mission house and encouraged deeper faith through teaching and prayer.
Gradually, their growing influence inspired the idea of building a new church to honor the saint. Construction began on March 22, 1912, and continued until 1919. Meanwhile, local residents offered steady support through labor, donations, and materials. Because everyone contributed, the project moved forward even when money was scarce.
Over the years, the church became a center of worship, hope, and community life. Moreover, it united the Redemptorists and the citizens of Curvelo through a shared vision of service. Their combined effort turned the simple mission into a landmark of devotion and perseverance.
Eventually, Pope Paul VI recognized its significance and named it a minor basilica on April 30, 1966. Since that moment, pilgrims from across Brazil have continued to visit, seeking guidance, healing, and peace. Today, the Basilica of St. Gerard Majella stands as a living reminder of faith joined with compassion. It continues to inspire believers and preserve the legacy of those who built it with courage and dedication.
