The Basilica of Our Lady of Penha de França is one of the most iconic Catholic churches in São Paulo. It stands on one of the highest points in the East Zone of the city. As a result, the church is visible from afar and has become a spiritual symbol for many in the region.
Over the years, the number of visitors began to grow steadily. The original Sanctuary of Penha soon became too small to accommodate the faithful who came for prayer, Mass, and celebrations. Consequently, church leaders recognized the need for a larger and more modern structure.
On September 15, 1957, Dom Carlos de Vasconcelos Mota laid the cornerstone of the new basilica. From the outset, the design aimed to reflect the church’s significance. The building, shaped like a cross, spans 5,645 square meters. It measures 66 meters in length and 56 meters in width. In addition, the central nave alone stretches 24 meters, offering ample space for liturgical activities. Two towers, each rising to about 60 meters, give the structure a striking vertical presence.
At the center of the church stands a large dome, 30 meters in diameter and 40 meters high. Because of its size, the basilica can hold up to 7,000 people, including seating for approximately 2,000. This makes it nearly ten times larger than the original sanctuary.
The first Mass in the new church was celebrated on Christmas Day in 1967. Since then, it has remained an important religious center for the city.
Today, the basilica continues to attract pilgrims from all over Brazil. With its rich history and inspiring architecture, it stands as a lasting symbol of Catholic faith in São Paulo.
