The Basilica of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross stands in Raalte, Overijssel. It is a Roman Catholic church. The design is neo-Gothic. Alfred Tepe created the plans. The church was built between 1891 and 1892. The basilica has a three-aisled hall. It also features a tall tower. Its design is similar to St. Nicholas Basilica in IJsselstein. Moreover, it draws influence from St. Lamberti Church in Münster. The construction cost reached 148,284.84½ guilders. The project received private funding. On October 19, 1892, Mgr. P.M. Snickers consecrated it. The basilica honors the Holy Cross. Saint Anthony of Padua holds patronage too. Locals affectionately call it the “Cathedral of Salland.” In 1955, workers added four clock faces to the tower. The clock faces went above the sound holes. A fourth clock face appeared on the nave side. In 1966, changes occurred. Workers removed dormers and added a flat roof. The church became a national monument in 1974. In the same year, the 79-meter-high carillon started ringing. Today, the basilica remains an important symbol. It continues to attract admiration for its beauty.
