The Minor Basilica and Royal Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Way stands in La Virgen del Camino near León in Spain. Pilgrims and visitors regularly travel through this important religious destination along the historic Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route.
Moreover, the sanctuary belongs to the municipality of Valverde de la Virgen in León province. Christians across the region honor Our Lady of the Way as the patron saint of León and Pamplona.
Previously, an older sanctuary welcomed worshippers for many years beside the pilgrimage route. However, growing numbers of parishioners and travelers encouraged church leaders to build a larger and more suitable basilica.
Therefore, architect Fray Coello de Portugal designed the present sanctuary between 1957 and 1961. He introduced modern architectural features together with impressive sculptural decorations throughout the basilica.
Additionally, the Dominican Order actively guided the spiritual mission of the sanctuary for many decades. The members promoted modern artistic expression while creating welcoming spaces for prayer, devotion, and peaceful reflection.
Meanwhile, León-born businessman Pablo Diez generously supported the construction project with financial contributions. He owned Grupo Modelo in Mexico and strongly encouraged the successful completion of the new basilica.
Furthermore, the sanctuary holds great importance because it stands directly along the Camino de Santiago route. Thousands of pilgrims continue visiting the basilica every year during their spiritual journeys across northern Spain.
In 2015, UNESCO approved the extension of the Camino de Santiago routes throughout Spain successfully. Officials also included the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Way within important retrospective documentation connected to associated pilgrimage components.
Today, the basilica continues attracting international pilgrims because of its inspiring history and spiritual significance. Its modern architecture and strong connection with the Camino de Santiago create memorable experiences for countless visitors worldwide.
