The Sanctuary of San Francesco da Paola, located 178 meters above sea level in the upper, hilly area of Paola, holds deep spiritual and historical significance. It rests in a valley surrounded by a stream and abundant vegetation, which provides a serene and tranquil environment for visitors. As a result, the sanctuary attracts pilgrims from across southern Italy, especially from Calabria, where San Francesco serves as the patron saint. The sanctuary contains part of the saint's remains, while the rest are preserved in Tours, France.

In October 1921, Pope Benedict XV elevated the sanctuary to the status of minor basilica, recognizing its importance in the Catholic faith. This decision added to the growing significance of the site, cementing its role in the region's religious landscape. Moreover, the sanctuary underwent a major expansion in 2000 with the opening of a new liturgical hall designed by architect Sandro Benedetti. This modern addition allowed for the accommodation of more worshippers, addressing the increasing number of pilgrims visiting the sanctuary.
