The Basilica of Our Lady of Dadizele in Belgium serves as a minor basilica dedicated to Our Lady. Initially, Edward Welby Pugin designed the structure in a neo-Gothic style, while Jean-Baptiste Bethune later took over the project. Construction started on 8 September 1857, and the first Holy Mass took place on 1 September 1867. Subsequently, Pope Leo XIII granted basilica status on 31 January 1882, making it one of two basilicas in the Bruges diocese.
Furthermore, the basilica replaced a 15th-century pilgrimage church that had drawn pilgrims since the 14th century. After the proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception on 8 December 1854, Bishop Joannes-Baptista Malou initiated the construction. Inside, the 15th-century alabaster statue of Our Lady and Child occupies a central place, attracting many visitors.
Moreover, many pilgrims visit the basilica frequently, especially in May and September. The crypt holds the mausoleum of Jan van Veerdeghem, also known as Jan van Dadizele. In 1479, Archduke Maximilian of Austria knighted him for his service. Van Dadizele played a crucial role in mediating conflicts between the Archduke and French King Louis XI. Unfortunately, assassins killed him in Antwerp in 1481.
On 1 July 2020, a new chapel opened to honor a relic of Pope John Paul II, which includes his hairs. The chapel's altarpiece prominently features John Paul II, Our Lady of Dadizele, and the basilica. Additionally, saints like Mother Teresa and Maximilian Kolbe appear alongside them. Statues of Mother Teresa and Saint Vincent stand near the altar, while images of Divine Mercy and the Madonna of Czestochowa beautifully decorate the walls.
