The Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption, also called St. Mary’s Church, Secunderabad, is a minor basilica on Sarojini Naidu Road in Secunderabad, India. Moreover, it serves as a center of faith, culture, and community activities. The church draws both local devotees and visitors from other cities. In 2008, the church officially received the title of a basilica on 7 November, highlighting its historical and spiritual significance.

Father Daniel Murphy and Bishop Carew played a key role in the early history of the church. They worked hard to build a permanent place of worship for the growing Roman Catholic community. As a result, the church became the main hub for religious activities in Secunderabad. St. Mary’s Church was completed in 1850. It initially served as the Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Hyderabad. However, in 1886, it stopped functioning as a cathedral but remained an important place for worship.

The church also contributed to education and social development. In 1871, a few nuns from St. Anne at Turin arrived and opened a school that later became St. Ann’s High School. Therefore, the church has supported spiritual growth and education in the area.

Today, St. Mary’s Church is the oldest Roman Catholic church in Secunderabad. It is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Furthermore, it is located next to the convent of St. Ann’s, which still runs the school. By combining devotion, history, and community engagement, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption continues to inspire worshippers.
