The Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Privat Cathedral in Mende serves as the episcopal seat of the diocese of Mende. This impressive structure stands in the center of Lozère's prefecture and has been classified as a historical monument since 1906. In recognition of its importance, Pope Pius IX elevated the cathedral to the rank of minor basilica in 1874. Today, it offers visitors the chance to venerate a remarkable 12th-century Black Virgin. This statue holds great significance for many people who visit. Additionally, the cathedral’s furnishings include impressive 17th-century organs and intricate woodwork. Early 18th-century Aubusson tapestries also contribute to its rich artistic heritage.

Moreover, the cathedral preserves the clapper of the "Non-Pareille." This bell was once the largest in Christianity when installed.
