The Münster of St. Maria and Markus is a Romanesque church on the island of Reichenau in Lake Constance (Untersee). Formerly, it served as the monastery church of Reichenau Abbey. Today, it functions as a Catholic parish church in the Mittelzell district. Moreover, it was the abbey church of the Benedictine monastery Monasterium Augiensis and is the largest of the three Romanesque churches on the island.
Construction began in the 9th century and was completed in the 11th century. Its architecture combines Romanesque elements with delicate decorations. In particular, the west façade, adorned with intricate sculptures, is highly impressive. These features make the Münster an outstanding example of Romanesque architecture.
Over the centuries, the church has undergone several renovations. Nevertheless, its historic charm and significance remain intact. As the center of the Benedictine abbey, it served as a key religious and cultural hub during the Middle Ages. Today, it continues to attract pilgrims and art enthusiasts from around the world.
The island of Reichenau is famous for its religious history. In addition, it is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and hosts numerous historical landmarks. These sites highlight the importance of the abbey and its churches. Therefore, the Münster of St. Maria and Markus remains a major landmark, reflecting both the island’s history and its rich religious heritage.
