Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá stands in present-day San Diego, California. The Franciscans founded it as the second mission in the Californias after San Fernando de Velicata. On July 16, 1769, Spanish friar Junípero Serra established the mission. Importantly, he chose a site long inhabited by the Kumeyaay people. The current church building dates from the early 19th century. In fact, builders constructed it as the fifth structure on the same site. Because of its importance, authorities designated the mission site as a National Historic Landmark.

The mission and its surroundings take their name from Didacus of Alcalá. This Catholic saint from Spain is more commonly known as San Diego. Moreover, the mission became the location of the first Christian burial in Alta California. However, local natives burned down the original mission in 1775 during an uprising. Additionally, the region saw its first public execution in 1778 near the mission grounds.

Father Luis Jayme played a key role in the mission’s early history. In fact, he became California’s first Christian martyr when natives killed him during the 1775 uprising. Today, the church entombs his remains beneath the chancel floor. His story symbolizes the faith and sacrifice connected to this place.
