Downside Abbey, a Benedictine monastery in Somerset, England, leads the English Benedictine Congregation. Meanwhile, Downside Abbey’s architectural legacy remains firmly rooted in its Abbey Church of St Gregory the Great. Construction on this stunning church began in 1873, showcasing a remarkable Gothic style. Though unfinished, the church earned a Grade I listing, highlighting its historical significance. Sir Nikolaus Pevsner, a renowned architectural historian, called it "the most splendid demonstration of the renaissance of Roman Catholicism in England." Despite this recognition, the number of monks steadily declined.
By 2020, only fifteen monks remained at Downside Abbey. With fewer members, the community embraced its new journey with a renewed sense of purpose. The move to Devon reflects not only a physical relocation but also the monks’ enduring commitment to preserving their faith and heritage as they look forward to a new future.
