The Đakovo Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral Basilica of St. Peter, stands in the heart of Đakovo, Croatia. It serves as the center of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Đakovo-Osijek. Most importantly, it represents the largest newly built sacred structure from the era of Croatian historicism.

Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer led the building project starting in 1866. The main construction ended by 1870. However, decorating the interior took another twelve years. In total, the entire process lasted sixteen years. Despite the long timeline, the result truly reflects the bishop’s vision.

Architects Carl Roesner and Friedrich von Schmidt, both from Vienna, designed the cathedral. They used a Romanesque-Revival style, which gives the building a bold and majestic look. As a result, its red brick exterior and twin towers dominate the skyline of Đakovo.

Inside, the cathedral presents an impressive artistic story. For instance, frescoes in the nave show scenes from the Old Testament. Meanwhile, those in the chancel depict moments from the life of St. Peter. Roman artists Alexander Maximillian and Lodovico Seitz painted most of them. Additionally, Achille Ansiglioni created two scenes. Some images also follow sketches by Friedrich Overbeck, a key figure in the Nazarene art movement.

Outside the cathedral, the nearby 19th-century park enhances the setting. Since it is a protected horticultural monument, it draws visitors who enjoy peaceful surroundings. Furthermore, the Small Park, added around 1900, adds charm to the area.
