Basilica Shrine of Our Lady of Montserrat, Hormigueros, Puerto Rico
The Basilica of Our Lady of Montserrat of Hormigueros, also called the Basilica of the Black Virgin of Monserrat (Spanish: Basilica de la Virgen Negra del Monserrate), is a historic Roman Catholic shrine in Hormigueros, Puerto Rico. Notably, this sacred site honors the Blessed Virgin Mary under the unique title of the “Virgin of Montserrat.” It represents Mary as a Black Madonna. Because of this, the image holds great spiritual importance for many local devotees and pilgrims. Every year, thousands travel to the basilica seeking comfort and blessings through their devotion.
Furthermore, Pope John Paul II officially recognized this devotion by granting a pontifical decree titled Omnibus Manifestum on July 18, 1994. This decree authorized the canonical coronation of the Marian image. Shortly after, Cardinal Luis Aponte Martínez, the former Archbishop of San Juan, solemnly performed the coronation ceremony on February 12, 1995. This act, therefore, symbolized the deep reverence the faithful hold for the Virgin of Montserrat.
Later, on May 19, 1998, Pope John Paul II issued another decree called Celeberrimum in Civitate. As a result, this decree elevated the sanctuary’s status by designating it as a minor basilica. The recognition honored the basilica’s spiritual and cultural importance within the Catholic Church. In addition, it granted special privileges that encouraged worship and pilgrimage at this sacred location. Thanks to these acts, the basilica stands as a beacon of faith in Puerto Rico and beyond. Consequently, it continues to inspire countless visitors with its rich history and religious symbolism.
