The Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (Maltese: Santwarju Bażilika tal-Madonna tal-Karmnu) stands in Valletta, Malta, as a Carmelite Roman Catholic minor basilica dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. It ranks among the most important religious landmarks in Valletta. Additionally, the Basilica forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site that includes the entire city.
The church’s construction began in 1958, and builders completed it by 1981. They replaced an older church, originally built in the late 16th century. Unfortunately, World War II destroyed the original structure. However, local authorities decided to rebuild the church on the same site. As a result, the new church quickly became a symbol of hope and renewal for the community.
Pope Leo XIII granted the church’s Marian image a Pontifical decree of canonical coronation on 19 June 1880. The Vatican Chapter issued this decree, which elevated the church’s status. Consequently, the coronation ceremony took place on 15 July 1881, marking a pivotal moment in Malta’s religious history.
