The Sanctuary of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos stands in Congonhas, Minas Gerais, Brazil. It is one of the most important religious and artistic sites in the country. The complex includes a church, six chapels, and a wide churchyard. Construction took place between 1757 and 1875.
Inside the church, visitors find gilded wood carvings and paintings that show strong religious themes. Meanwhile, the churchyard displays twelve life-sized statues of prophets, all carved in soapstone by Aleijadinho. These sculptures rank among the most famous works in Brazilian art.
Moreover, each chapel next to the church tells part of the Passion of Christ. These chapels contain painted wooden figures that guide pilgrims through key moments of the story. Aleijadinho, with help from his workshop, sculpted the entire set. In addition, their layout follows the European “sacromonti,” which are holy mountains used for devotion.
Several artists also added to the sanctuary’s beauty. For example, Francisco de Lima Cerqueira worked on the church’s structure. Likewise, Mestre Ataíde and João Nepomuceno Correia e Castro contributed to its decoration. Together, they created a unique religious and cultural landmark.
The site continues to attract many pilgrims and tourists every year. People come to pray, reflect, or admire the art. Furthermore, the sanctuary holds hundreds of votive offerings left by the faithful in gratitude.
Because of its cultural value, Brazil recognized it as a national heritage site in 1939. Then, in 1957, Pope Pius XII named it a minor basilica. Later, in 1985, UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site.
