The Basilica of St. James (Bazilika svätého Jakuba) is a Gothic Roman Catholic church located in Levoča, a historic town in eastern Slovakia. Dedicated to St. James the Apostle, it serves as an active parish and a revered national monument.
Construction of the church began in the 14th century, during a time when Levoča was becoming a center of religious and cultural activity. Over the centuries, the basilica has grown in both size and significance.
Inside the church stands the tallest wooden altar in the world. Created by Master Paul of Levoča and completed in 1517, this 18.62-meter masterpiece remains one of Slovakia’s greatest artistic treasures. The church also features other Gothic altars, detailed carvings, and well-preserved medieval pews.
The steeple, added in the 19th century, blends with the original Gothic architecture. It reflects the basilica’s layered history and architectural evolution while preserving its historic character.
In 2009, UNESCO included the church in the World Heritage Site “Levoča, Spiš Castle and the Associated Cultural Monuments.” This recognition confirmed its global cultural value. Later, in 2015, Pope Francis elevated the church to the status of a minor basilica.
Today, the basilica continues to welcome pilgrims, tourists, and art lovers. Many visit to pray or attend Mass, while others admire its history and artistic detail. Its atmosphere combines spiritual serenity with centuries of Slovak craftsmanship.
The Basilica of St. James remains a symbol of endurance, faith, and cultural pride. Whether one enters for worship or exploration, the church offers a quiet yet powerful experience in the heart of Levoča.
