The Basilica of Zapopan and the Convent of Our Lady of Expectation stand in the heart of Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico. This Franciscan sanctuary holds deep spiritual and cultural importance. It is the second most visited Marian site in the state, surpassed only by the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan de los Lagos.
Moreover, the sanctuary belongs to the Franciscan Province of Saints Francis and James. This province includes regions such as Jalisco, San Luis Potosí, Aguascalientes, Colima, Zacatecas, Tamaulipas, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Durango, and Nayarit. It even extends into parts of Texas. Therefore, its influence spans across national and regional boundaries.
In addition to its location, the convent functions as a formation center for future Franciscan friars of the Observant branch. Other Franciscan groups, including the Capuchins and Franciscan Sisters, visit regularly. Likewise, enclosed communities like the Poor Clares and laypeople from the Secular Franciscan Order remain actively involved. Furthermore, the friars work closely with other religious orders, especially the Dominicans.
Besides religious formation, the convent engages actively with youth. Through the Franciscan Youth group, Jufra of San Roque, young people explore their faith and learn to live it in daily life. They also take part in service, prayer, and reflection.
To enhance community worship, the friars formed a children’s choir in May 2003. This group includes young participants who sing at liturgical events. Fray Jorge Chumacera directs the choir. As a result, the choir strengthens both worship and cultural expression through music.
Ultimately, the Basilica of Zapopan remains a vibrant center of Catholic devotion. It supports formation, celebrates tradition, and promotes unity. Through its outreach, it continues to welcome people from all backgrounds with joy and faith.
