The Basilica of Our Lady of Itatí is a Catholic sanctuary and temple. It serves as the main center of veneration for the Virgin of Itatí. Situated in front of the main square of Itatí, in Corrientes province, Argentina, it attracts many visitors every year.
Initially, devotion began with a wooden sculpture brought to an indigenous settlement, now known as Itatí. According to tradition, Mary appeared in 1615 and expressed her wish to remain there. The basilica is the last of nine shrines honoring this image. Construction began in 1938, led by Italian architect Alfredo Gibellini. Subsequently, it partially opened on July 16, 1950, marking the 50th anniversary of the Virgin’s Coronation.
Its size and design are unique in the region. The building measures 81 meters long and 63 meters wide. Furthermore, it can hold up to 9,000 faithful inside. A copper image of the Virgin crowns the peak, which rises to 88 meters. Therefore, it is the tallest basilica in South America. The old chapel remains on one side and now serves as a Sacred Museum. Large columns, murals, bas-reliefs, and windows decorate the three naves. Together, they allow soft light to enter, creating a serene atmosphere.
Behind the main altar lies the Virgin’s alcove. This small chapel offers a place for private meditation. Additionally, a mural shows indigenous people playing native instruments while venerating the Virgin by the Paraná River. The Virgin’s image sits in a rotating display case. During Mass, it faces the main altar; however, during silent adoration, it slowly turns to face the alcove.
The basilica faces the town’s main square, which lies about 200 meters from the Paraná River shore. From the river, visitors enjoy a stunning view of the dome. A street separates the square from the sanctuary. As a result, the basilica draws many faithful during the patron saint’s festivals.
