The Baroque Mariatrost Basilica, perched atop Purberg Hill in Mariatrost, a district of Graz, stands as one of Styria’s renowned pilgrimage sites. This church overlooks Graz from a height of 469 meters and features the 200-step Angelus stairway for access. Recognized for its stunning Baroque architecture, the basilica has two striking front towers, each 61 meters tall. Additionally, a distinctive dome rises above, visible from great distances.

Furthermore, the church sits beside remnants of a former monastery. This monastery housed the Pauline Fathers from 1708 to 1786. Later, the Franciscans occupied the site from 1842 to 1996, enriching its history. Builders began construction in 1714 under Andreas Stengg and his son, Johann Georg Stengg. They completed the structure in 1724, showcasing remarkable architectural skill.

Among the notable interior features, the pulpit crafted by Veit Königer in 1730/31 stands out as a masterpiece. Additionally, beautiful frescoes adorn the ceiling, created by Lukas von Schram and Johann Baptist Scheidt. These frescoes add significant artistic value to the church.

Moreover, the main altar displays a statue of the Madonna, originally sculpted in the Gothic style around 1465. Later, Bernhard Echter adapted it to the Baroque aesthetic in 1695, blending styles beautifully.

Notably, Father David Bauer, a Canadian ice hockey coach and Basilian priest, gained a following during his time in Austria. He celebrated Mass at the basilica on several occasions, connecting with the local community.

On October 28, 1999, the church received designation as a basilica minor, solidifying its importance in the region. Today, the Mariatrost Basilica ranks as the second most significant Marian shrine in Styria, after the Mariazell Basilica, attracting many pilgrims each year.
