Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Stara Wieś, Poland
The Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary stands in Stara Wieś. First of all, it is a fine example of late Baroque architecture. Between 1730 and 1760, the Pauline Fathers built the church and its nearby monastery. After thirty years of work, Bishop Wacław Hieronim Sierakowski of Przemyśl consecrated the church in 1760. As a result, the basilica became a center of spiritual life in the region.
Later on, the Jesuits took over care of the church and monastery. Since then, they brought their own tradition of education and spiritual formation. Until 2016, the monastery served as the novitiate for young Jesuits. For many years, it welcomed men beginning their religious path. Meanwhile, the basilica continued to draw pilgrims from near and far.
The main altar features a copy of a miraculous painting. Specifically, it shows the Dormition and Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Because of its importance, the painting became the heart of Marian devotion there. On September 8, 1877, Archbishop Lodovico Jacobini crowned the image. At that time, he was the Apostolic Nuncio in Vienna and later became a cardinal. Therefore, the event gave the church even greater religious meaning.
Eventually, the Catholic Church gave it the title of a minor basilica in 1927. This recognition, in turn, confirmed its growing influence as a pilgrimage site.
Even today, the basilica inspires awe and reflection. Inside, visitors admire its beautiful art and sacred space. In the same way, they experience deep peace and devotion. Altogether, the basilica connects past and present. Above all, it continues to serve as a living witness of faith.
