The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of Ta’ Pinu (Maltese: Santwarju Bażilika tal-Madonna ta' Pinu) is a Roman Catholic minor basilica. It is also a national shrine of Malta. The basilica stands about 700 meters from the quiet village of Għarb, on the island of Gozo. Surrounded by open countryside, it is a peaceful and spiritual place. Many people visit it for prayer, reflection, and healing.

Over time, the shrine became very important to the Maltese people. As a result, the Catholic Church officially recognized it. On 24 May 1935, Pope Pius XI issued a decree of coronation. The document was titled Marianum exstat Sanctuarium. It honored the sacred image of the Blessed Virgin of Ta’ Pinu, which is deeply venerated by pilgrims. This marked a key moment in the shrine’s religious history.

Cardinal Alexis Lépicier, the Archbishop of Tarsus, signed the decree. Meanwhile, Giuseppe Guerri, Regent of the Apostolic Dataria, officially notarized it. The decree came through the Sacred Congregation of Rites, the Church body that handled such matters. These actions confirmed the shrine’s high status in the Catholic world.

The coronation of the image took place on 20 June 1935. It was a solemn and joyful event. Many people attended the ceremony and celebrated the shrine’s growing importance. From then on, the basilica became a national symbol of faith.

Today, Ta’ Pinu continues to attract pilgrims from Malta and beyond. Despite modern changes, it remains a place of deep devotion. Its history, beauty, and spiritual meaning make it one of Malta’s most cherished religious sites. Visitors leave inspired by its peace and power.
