The Cathedral Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul in Paramaribo, Suriname, stands as one of the most treasured religious landmarks in the country. The story of this cathedral began in 1826, when the Roman Catholic Church transformed De Verrezene Phoenix, a Dutch Jewish theatre built in 1809, into a sacred place for worship. Later, in 1858, the Diocese of Paramaribo appointed its first bishop and officially declared the building a cathedral.
As the congregation expanded, church leaders decided to build a larger and more enduring structure. Frans Harmes designed the new cathedral, and construction began on January 30, 1883, on the same site as the original theatre. Moreover, builders used Surinamese cedar, which gave the interior a naturally warm and peaceful atmosphere. The clergy consecrated the new cathedral in 1885, and by 1901, its elegant twin towers completed the majestic appearance that still inspires visitors today.
However, as time passed, termites and foundation issues caused significant damage. Although a small restoration took place in 1977, the building continued to deteriorate. Fortunately, in 2002, church authorities began a major renovation that revived both its strength and beauty. Furthermore, with European Union assistance, another comprehensive restoration began in 2007, ensuring the cathedral’s preservation for future generations.
After three years of dedicated work, the cathedral reopened on November 13, 2010, welcoming worshippers once again. Interestingly, the original gate, built in 1809, marked its 200th anniversary in 2009, symbolizing the cathedral’s deep connection between past and present. Today, the Cathedral Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul continues to represent faith, unity, and cultural pride through its enduring wooden architecture.
