St John the Baptist Church stands in Chester, Cheshire. Firstly, it sits on a cliff above the River Dee. Moreover, it lies outside the old city walls. Originally, Anglo-Saxons founded the church in the late seventh century. At that time, they chose the site for safety and meaning. Later, builders expanded the church. As a result, it became a fine eleventh and twelfth century building. Meanwhile, bishops from Lichfield ruled from here between 1075 and 1095. Consequently, the church served as Chester’s cathedral until 1082. Then, leaders moved the bishop’s seat to Coventry. Afterwards, the Reformation changed its role in 1541. Therefore, the church became a parish church. However, soldiers used it during the Civil War. Much later, restorers repaired it. Today, people protect it as a Grade One listed church.
