The Minor Basilica and Parish of Saint Gregory the Great, also known as Majayjay Church, is one of the oldest Roman Catholic churches in the Philippines. It stands proudly in the municipality of Majayjay, Laguna. This historic church belongs to the Diocese of San Pablo. Over the years, it has become a vital religious and cultural landmark.
The church’s history dates back to the Spanish colonial period. It was originally established as a parish, serving the growing Catholic community. Since then, Majayjay Church has undergone several renovations, but it has maintained much of its original structure. As a result, the church has become a prime example of early Catholic architecture in the country.
In 2001, the National Museum recognized Majayjay Church as a National Cultural Treasure (Level 1). This distinction highlights the church’s significance, not only as a place of worship but also as an important cultural and historical monument. Furthermore, the church plays a vital role in preserving Filipino traditions and religious practices.
Each year, the church draws thousands of visitors and pilgrims. They come to celebrate feasts, attend Mass, and reflect on the country's Catholic heritage. Additionally, the church organizes various community events, including festivals and religious processions. These events foster a deeper connection between the church and the people.
Today, the Minor Basilica of Saint Gregory the Great continues to stand as a symbol of faith, history, and culture. Its enduring significance ensures that it remains a cherished institution for both local residents and visitors alike.
