The Cathedral of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, officially the Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, serves as a Catholic church in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. It honors Saint Catherine of Alexandria and stands at the east corner of Bolívar Park, beside Plaza de la Proclamación. Therefore, it acts as the episcopal seat of the Archbishop of Cartagena and represents one of the oldest sees in the Americas. The cathedral follows the Herrerian architectural style, which was popular during the reign of Philip II. This style reflects the final stage of Spanish Renaissance architecture. Master builder Simón González designed it by studying basilicas in Andalusia and the Canary Islands. Later, in the early twentieth century, French architect Gaston Lelarge remodeled the tower, giving it its current form. The building follows a basilica plan, divided into three naves, and includes chapels along the gospel nave. Construction started in 1577, replacing a small cathedral made of straw and reeds. In 1586, pirate Francis Drake attacked Cartagena, causing severe damage. In 1953, Pope Pius XII granted it the title of Minor Basilica.
