The Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica, also called Kotta Palli or Kottepalli, stands in Fort Kochi, Kerala. It ranks among the most important religious and heritage landmarks in the region. Moreover, it is one of the thirty-four basilicas in India. It is also one of the nine basilicas located in Kerala. In addition, the church serves as the cathedral of the Diocese of Cochin. It plays a key role in guiding the spiritual life of the local Catholic community.

Historically, Portuguese missionaries built the original church in 1505 after receiving permission from the King of Cochin. Later, Pope Paul IV raised the church to cathedral status in 1558. Although Dutch conquerors destroyed many Catholic buildings during the seventeenth century, they spared this cathedral. However, British forces later demolished the structure in 1795. This action created the need for a new building.

Consequently, Bishop João Gomes Ferreira commissioned a new cathedral in 1887. Architects designed the structure in an elegant Indo-European and Gothic style. Thereafter, church authorities consecrated the new building in 1905. Much later, Pope John Paul II declared it a minor basilica in 1984.

Today, the Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica attracts tourists and pilgrims throughout the year. Visitors admire its stained-glass windows, painted ceilings, and artistic altars. Furthermore, the basilica functions as both a sacred place of worship and a symbol of historic pride. As a result, it continues to preserve the architectural, cultural, and spiritual legacy of Fort Kochi.
