The Basilica of Saint-Sauveur, also known as Our Lady of Miracles and Virtues, is located in central Rennes, Brittany. Founded in the 12th century as Saint-Sauveur, it has undergone several expansions and reconstructions. The most significant rebuilding took place in the early 18th century. For nearly three hundred years, it served as the parish church of Rennes. However, during and after the Second World War, its role as a parish church ended. It was reopened as a parish again in 2002.
Devotion to Notre-Dame grew after several miraculous events occurred in the 14th and 18th centuries. These events led to an increased following of the Virgin Mary. As a result, the church became a major site of pilgrimage and veneration. In 1916, it was officially designated as a minor basilica. Architecturally, the basilica features a classical style. Inside, it boasts impressive furnishings. Notable features include the canopy above the high altar, the wrought-iron pulpit, and the majestic organ.
Additionally, the basilica is home to numerous ex-votos, offerings from the faithful. These ex-votos express gratitude for prayers answered and miracles believed to have occurred. The church’s rich history, beautiful interior, and religious significance make it a beloved landmark in Rennes. The Basilica of Saint-Sauveur continues to serve as an important place of worship and pilgrimage for locals and visitors alike. It stands as a testament to the enduring faith and devotion of the people of Rennes.
