The Basilica of Saint-Amable in Riom is the largest religious building in Auvergne, second only to the Cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption in Clermont-Ferrand. Located in Riom, the basilica became a minor basilica in 1912. The Bishop of Clermont requested Pope Pius X to grant this title. On March 7, 1912, the Pope granted the request through a papal brief. Today, the basilica is one of three in the Diocese of Clermont, along with the Basilica of Notre-Dame-du-Port in Clermont-Ferrand and the Basilica of Notre-Dame d'Orcival in Orcival.
Construction of the basilica began in the 12th and 13th centuries. Over the years, the building has undergone modifications. Initially, the basilica was a site of pilgrimage. Pilgrims came to honor the relics of Saint Amable, the basilica’s patron saint. This tradition of pilgrimage continued until the early 20th century when it began to fade.
The basilica is known for its bell tower and slate spire, which rise above the town. These features are visible from a distance, making the basilica a prominent landmark. Visitors continue to admire the church today for its architectural beauty and historical significance.
Although it no longer functions as a major pilgrimage site, the Basilica of Saint-Amable remains an important symbol of the region’s religious heritage. Its connection to Saint Amable and its lasting beauty make it a cherished part of Riom’s history.
