The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Marienthal (French: Basilique Notre-Dame de Marienthal) serves as a Catholic pilgrimage site dedicated to Mary, the mother of Jesus. Located in Marienthal, in the Bas-Rhin department of northeastern France, the basilica falls within the town of Haguenau. Over the years, pilgrims have visited it for its spiritual significance.
The sanctuary's history begins around 1250. Albert of Haguenau, a knight, founded the first church after experiencing a religious epiphany. He gathered a small community of believers and constructed a sanctuary dedicated to Mary in the Valley. The original statue of the Madonna and Child, however, did not survive.
In the early 15th century, artists created two statues: the Madonna and Child and the Pietà. These statues continue to hold a central place in the basilica’s devotion. In 1859, Pope Pius IX granted a canonical coronation to the Marian image housed within the church. Then, in 1892, Pope Leo XIII elevated the church to a Minor Basilica.
During the 18th century, Marie Leszczyńska, the queen consort of Louis XV, donated valuable gifts to the basilica. These offerings enriched the church’s artistic and spiritual legacy. Today, the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Marienthal remains a vital pilgrimage site, attracting visitors who seek spiritual renewal and strength.
