The Basilica of Our Lady of Bonsecours is in Bonsecours, near Rouen, on a pilgrimage site. It overlooks the Rouen metropolis and is an iconic landmark. The church was designed by Jacques-Eugène Barthélémy, a well-known Rouen architect who also designed many other churches in the region. It became a historical monument on August 24, 2004.
Across from the basilica’s western façade is the monument to Joan of Arc, a tribute to the heroine. Created by architect Juste Lisch and sculptor Louis-Ernest Barrias, it was inaugurated in 1892. The monument features Saint Michael the Archangel at its summit and overlooks Rouen.
In the nearby cemetery is the tomb of José-Maria de Heredia, a poet who died in 1905. Nearby is the tomb of Father Jacques Hamel, a priest murdered in 2016. His grave is in a square dedicated to priests and religious figures.
The basilica is the center of the Notre-Dame-de-Bonsecours parish, part of the Rouen archdiocese. The rector is Sister Viviane Charpentier from the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary. Father Frédéric Masset is the administrator, overseeing the basilica’s spiritual and practical needs.
