The Basilica of Our Lady of Good News is located in the center of Rennes, on Place Sainte-Anne. This building, though still unfinished, replaced an older church of the same name. This first structure, erected in the Middle Ages, was too small to accommodate the growing population. Consequently, in the 19th century, a project for a new church was launched. Construction began in 1864. However, despite several phases of construction, the church was never fully completed.
In 1916, the building was elevated to the rank of minor basilica. This distinction was granted by the Pope due to its spiritual significance. The basilica also played a central role for the inhabitants of Rennes, becoming an essential place of devotion for many believers.
The basilica's architecture is a blend of Neo-Gothic and Classical elements. This combination creates an atmosphere of majesty and serenity. Inside, the stained-glass windows capture the light in a striking way. The liturgical furnishings also contribute to the overall beauty.
Today, the basilica remains an active place of worship. However, it also attracts many tourists who come to admire the architecture and history of this unique building. In short, Notre-Dame-de-Bonne-Nouvelle is a symbol of faith and culture in Rennes. Despite being unfinished, it continues to impress and captivate.
