Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, Santa Fe de Antioquia, Colombia

The Cathedral of Santa Fe de Antioquia, officially the Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, is the main Catholic church in the city. It honors the Virgin Mary under the patronage of the Immaculate Conception. Moreover, it stands on the northeast side of the main square, marking a central point of spiritual and civic life. The cathedral serves as the seat of the archbishop and the Metropolitan Chapter. Therefore, it functions as the religious heart of the region.

Fray Domingo de Petrés designed the cathedral. He also designed the Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica of Bogotá and the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity and Saint Anthony of Padua of Zipaquirá. Its style is mainly neoclassical, with added baroque details. The building features a single rectangular tower that rises 47 meters high, visible from most of the town. Inside, the cathedral contains three naves. Semicircular arches rest on Tuscan columns, creating an elegant and orderly interior.

The cathedral also houses valuable colonial artworks. These works reflect centuries of religious and cultural heritage. Visitors, including tourists and worshippers, come to admire both the sacred space and the artistic treasures. The cathedral strengthens the identity of Santa Fe de Antioquia. Furthermore, the city’s historic sector, including the cathedral, became a National Monument of Colombia under Law 163 on December 30, 1959.
