The Co-Cathedral Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity, also known as Chełmża Cathedral, stands in the northern Polish city of Chełmża. It belongs to the Roman Catholic Church and plays a central role in the Diocese of Toruń. Since 1994, the church has functioned as a co-cathedral for the diocese and continues to serve many faithful in the region.

Although the church originally served the Diocese of Chełmno, it received the title of minor basilica in 1982. Since then, it has drawn visitors, pilgrims, and scholars who admire its history and architecture. Located on a slope near a scenic lake, the basilica offers a peaceful setting for reflection and prayer. Its surroundings add both beauty and depth to its sacred character.

Construction of the basilica began in 1251 and continued into the early 14th century. However, it faced repeated setbacks during its early years. In 1267 and again in 1286, Prussian raids destroyed large parts of the church. Then, in 1422, a fire during a Lithuanian-Tatar raid caused further destruction. Later, in 1950, another fire damaged the nave’s ceilings, the dome, and the central arch beam.

Despite these tragedies, the church community chose to restore what had been lost. Between 1968 and 1971, they completed a full reconstruction and carefully returned the building to its original Gothic form. As a result, the basilica still stands strong today.

Through centuries of change, the Co-Cathedral Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity continues to represent faith, endurance, and renewal. Although time and conflict challenged its survival, the people of Chełmża rebuilt it with hope and devotion. Today, it remains one of the region’s most treasured religious landmarks.
