The Basílica Minore del Santo Niño de Cebú, also called the Minor Basilica of the Holy Child or Santo Niño Basilica, stands in Cebu City, Philippines. It serves as a center for Catholic worship and also symbolizes the birth and growth of Christianity in the country. Every year, thousands of pilgrims, devotees, and tourists visit the basilica. Moreover, the Archdiocese of Cebu and the Augustinian Province of Santo Niño de Cebu manage its spiritual programs, activities, and preservation.
Fray Andrés de Urdaneta and Fray Diego de Herrera founded the basilica in 1565. Many believe they built it on the spot where people discovered the sacred image of the Santo Niño de Cebú. In addition, the site links the church to the Philippines’ early colonial and religious history. Furthermore, its historical and spiritual significance draws visitors from all over the country.
Ferdinand Magellan gave the image of the Child Jesus to the chief consort of Rajah Humabon during their royal Baptism on April 14, 1521. About forty years later, a soldier named Juan de Camuz discovered the image in a wooden box after Legazpi destroyed a local village. Then, people considered the image miraculous, and it became central to Catholic devotion in the Philippines.
Pope Paul VI elevated the church to a minor basilica in 1965. He also called it “the symbol of the birth and growth of Christianity in the Philippines.” The present building was completed in 1740. The Holy See recognizes it as the “Mother and Head of all Churches in the Philippines.” Today, worshippers, pilgrims, and tourists explore the basilica. Moreover, they admire its architecture, sacred image, and centuries of history. The church continues to inspire faith, devotion, and cultural pride across generations.
