Co-Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption, Baracoa, Cuba
The Our Lady of the Assumption Co-Cathedral (Spanish: Concatedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción), also known as Baracoa Cathedral, stands in Baracoa, a historic town in Cuba. The cathedral plays a key role in the town’s spiritual and cultural life.
Spanish colonists built the original structure in 1807. After suffering damage in 1833, the church underwent repairs. By 1886, most of the building had been reconstructed. In 1905, workers completed the cathedral’s distinctive portico.
Over time, the church began to show signs of decay. By the early 21st century, the cathedral needed significant restoration. In 2012, a major renovation project revived the church and preserved its historical charm.
The cathedral follows the Roman or Latin rite. Along with the St. Catherine of Ricci Cathedral in Guantánamo, it serves as one of the main churches of the Diocese of Guantánamo-Baracoa (Dioecesis Guantanamensis-Baracoensis), which Pope John Paul II created in 1998.
Today, the cathedral remains an active place of worship and a symbol of Baracoa’s rich colonial history and architectural heritage. Visitors from around the world admire its beauty and historical significance.
