St. Hedwig's Cathedral (German: St.-Hedwigs-Kathedrale) is the Catholic cathedral of the Archdiocese of Berlin. Located on Bebelplatz in Berlin's historic center, it is dedicated to Hedwig of Silesia. Originally, the cathedral was built between 1747 and 1887. Frederick the Great commissioned the project, and Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff designed it in Baroque style. As a result, the cathedral became a landmark in Berlin due to its impressive architecture and historical importance.
However, during World War II, the cathedral suffered extensive damage from Allied bombing. Consequently, from 1952 to 1963, the interior was restored in a modernist style, reflecting the post-war era. This restoration was part of rebuilding the Forum Fridericianum on Bebelplatz.
More recently, the cathedral has been closed for renovation since 2018. The reason is that the work aims to preserve the building’s structure while making necessary updates. Moreover, the renovation is expected to be completed by 24 November 2024. Once reopened, visitors will again be able to admire the cathedral’s beauty and significance.
Importantly, the restoration of St. Hedwig's Cathedral is significant for both religious and cultural reasons. In addition, it reflects Berlin’s dedication to preserving its architectural heritage. After reopening, the cathedral will once again offer a space for worship and reflection. Furthermore, the building’s mix of Baroque exterior and modern interior will highlight Berlin’s history of resilience and renewal.
