Cathedral Basilica of the Holy Saviour, San Salvador de Jujuy, Argentina
The Cathedral Basilica of the Holy Saviour, or Catedral Basílica de San Salvador de Jujuy, serves as the main church of the Catholic bishopric in San Salvador de Jujuy, Argentina. The government declared it a National Historical Monument on May 16, 1931. This cathedral is an excellent example of eighteenth-century Spanish colonial architecture. Several churches stood on this site before, but fragile materials caused them to decay quickly. In 1736, officials declared the last building unsafe, and construction began on the current cathedral soon after. Historians believe it opened and was consecrated between 1761 and 1765. Since then, the cathedral has seen minor renovations in the late 1800s and 1900s to maintain its historic character.
This cathedral holds a special place in Argentina’s history. On May 25, 1812, Manuel Belgrano’s new national flag was blessed here. Shortly after, soldiers and citizens gathered outside the Cabildo to swear loyalty to the flag. Luis De Servi later painted a scene commemorating this event. The artwork hangs inside the cathedral. The church also honors Our Lady of the Rosary of Paypaya and White River. Argentina declared her the “Patron of the Armies of the North” in 1812 because of her symbolic support during the country’s fight for independence. Today, the Cathedral Basilica of the Holy Saviour remains a vibrant place of worship. It also stands as a proud symbol of Argentina’s colonial heritage and national pride.
