The Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady, often referred to as Győr Cathedral (Mennyekbe Fölvett Boldogságos Szűz Mária székesegyház in Hungarian), stands as a central landmark of Catholic devotion in the city of Győr, Hungary. It functions as the seat of the Diocese of Győr and continues to serve as a vibrant place of worship and cultural significance.

Builders first erected the church in the early 11th century using the Romanesque style. However, Mongol invasions in the 13th century led to the complete destruction of the original structure. Local communities, determined to preserve their sacred space, began rebuilding efforts soon after and continued construction until the 15th century.

After Hungarian forces drove out the Turks, church leaders initiated a major transformation of the interior. Between 1635 and 1650, Italian architect Giovanni Battista Rava redesigned the space in the early Baroque style. His vision introduced elaborate ornamentation and expressive features that still inspire visitors today. Though the core of the church reached completion, the bell tower only rose in 1680, marking the final major addition during that era.

The cathedral continued evolving, with work extending into the 1770s as tastes and religious practices changed. During the 20th century, restoration specialists took on the task of preserving its beauty. From 1968 to 1972, the building underwent a full restoration that ensured structural stability and honored its artistic legacy.

Recognizing the cathedral’s spiritual and historical importance, Pope John Paul II granted it the title of minor basilica in 1997. This designation confirmed its exceptional role in Hungary’s Catholic tradition and helped secure its continued relevance in the modern era. Today, both pilgrims and visitors alike are drawn to its beauty, history, and enduring presence.
