Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, Covington, USA
St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption is a Roman Catholic church in Covington, Kentucky. In fact, it holds the special title of a minor basilica in the United States. The basilica sits just across the river from Cincinnati, Ohio, and belongs to the Diocese of Covington.
Originally, a smaller church stood on this site. It was built in 1834 and had a wooden frame. However, over time, the Catholic population in Covington grew significantly. Consequently, the old church became too small for the community. Therefore, church leaders decided that they needed a much larger building.
In 1895, Bishop Camillus Paul Maes, the third bishop of the diocese, began construction on the new cathedral. He wanted a church that would be both beautiful and long-lasting. Inspired by European cathedrals, especially those in the Gothic style, he planned a design with detailed carvings, high arches, and large stained-glass windows. Furthermore, the cathedral would serve as a symbol of faith and devotion for the growing community.
The community actively supported the project. They gave time, money, and effort to help build the cathedral. Although they never fully completed the original design, the building remains impressive. For example, it features one of the largest stained-glass windows in the world. Moreover, it houses a grand pipe organ and detailed stone sculptures.
Because of its religious significance and architectural beauty, the Vatican recognized the cathedral. Thus, on December 8, 1953, Pope Pius XII elevated it to the rank of minor basilica. This honor highlighted the church’s importance in both faith and art.
Today, the basilica welcomes many worshippers and visitors. People come not only to attend Mass but also to admire its history and artistry. As a result, the basilica continues to stand as a proud symbol of faith, dedication, and community spirit.
