The Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of the Light, also called León Cathedral, stands in the historic center of León, Mexico. It serves as the main church for the Metropolitan Archdiocese of León. The cathedral has remained an important religious site since its consecration in 1866.

In 1764, the Jesuits began building the Temple of the New Company. They had returned to León after leaving a year earlier. Their original temple, known as Companía Vieja, had fallen into serious disrepair. They planned to dedicate the new church to the Virgin of Light. However, in 1767, the Jesuits were expelled from Mexico, and construction stopped.

For many years, the temple remained incomplete. Then, in 1864, church leaders established the Diocese of León. Bishop José María de Jesús Díez de Sollano took charge soon after. He immediately focused on completing the church. People in the city still called it the New Company. Under his leadership, the church became the cathedral.

By then, workers had already finished the vaults between 1833 and 1837. In 1864, builders also restored the first level of the eastern tower. This gave the building a more finished and formal look. Meanwhile, between December 1865 and January 1866, workers cast the largest bell. It weighed 4.5 tons and marked a major step toward completion.

Although the cathedral faced many delays, determined leaders saw the project through. Over time, it grew into a symbol of faith and identity. Today, the building remains one of León’s most cherished landmarks. Visitors admire both its long history and elegant structure.
