The Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace (Spanish: Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Paz), also called Lomas de Zamora Cathedral, stands in the central square of Lomas de Zamora, Argentina. It serves as an important symbol of faith and community. In 1860, Victorio Grigera donated the land where the cathedral, Grigera Square, and the Municipality are located. This generous gift shaped the city’s cultural and spiritual center. Construction began on January 16, 1860, led by architects Nicolás and José Canale. They combined classical and regional styles in the design. The cornerstone was laid by Bartolomé Mitre, who later became President of Argentina. After five years of work, the cathedral opened on January 22, 1865. It quickly became a place of worship and civic pride for Lomas de Zamora.

As the city grew, the cathedral needed expansion. In 1898, architects Juan Ochoa and Domingo Selva started a new construction phase. They added a dome, a transept, and a sanctuary. These features enhanced the building’s beauty and harmony. Construction finished on January 24, 1900, marking a new chapter in the cathedral’s history. In 1965, Pope Paul VI honored the church with the title of Minor Basilica. This recognition celebrated its lasting spiritual and cultural importance across Argentina.
