The Basilica Cathedral of the Holy Spirit and Our Lady of Coromoto, also called GuanareCathedral, is located in Guanare, the capital of Portuguesa State, Venezuela. This 18th-century church is dedicated to Our Lady of Coromoto, the patron saint of Venezuela. Construction began in 1710 under Father Francisco Valenzuela, and the church was finished in 1742. Sadly, the October 15, 1782 earthquake caused severe damage, leading to the closure of the church.
Reconstruction began in 1788, and by November 3, 1807, the church reopened. Over the years, it grew into a significant place of worship and a cultural landmark. In 1949, Pope Pius XII elevated the church to the status of Minor Basilica. Later, in 1960, it became an official historical monument, according to Official Gazette No. 36,320.
Inside the cathedral, visitors admire the altarpiece created by José Quiñones in the Baroque-Colonial Churrigueresque style. Its detailed craftsmanship highlights the artistic heritage of the time. The cathedral’s stained-glass windows, designed by FX Zettler in Munich, add to its beauty, casting vibrant colors across the interior.
Today, the GuanareCathedral remains a central place of worship and a significant cultural site. It draws pilgrims from across the country, offering them a space for prayer and reflection. Tourists also visit to appreciate its architectural grandeur and rich history. The cathedral continues to serve as both a spiritual center and a historical treasure for Venezuela.
