Construction started in 1950 and finished around 1958. The building follows a Greek cross plan, giving it a balanced and symbolic design that reflects faith and simplicity.

On September 25, 1965, the church gained the title of basilica, marking an important milestone in its history. Later, Municipal Decree No. 3908, issued on May 21, 1999, officially recognized it as part of Barbacena’s cultural heritage. The basilica belongs to the Archdiocese of Mariana, and Canon Antonio Eustáquio Barbosa currently serves as its parish priest.

The church stands on a high point in the city and offers sweeping views of Barbacena. Because of its location, the basilica is visible from almost anywhere in town, creating a strong presence in the city’s skyline. Originally, the builders planned a small replica of St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. Financial limits, however, led to a simpler design based on the Greek cross.
