Iglesia de San Juan el Real is a historic church located in Oviedo, Asturias, Spain. The origins of this sacred site trace back to 862, when King Alfonso III the Great built an altar dedicated to Saint John the Baptist beside his palace. In 1006, King Alfonso VI granted the land for religious use, and a parish community began to grow around it.
Over time, the site welcomed pilgrims and supported a hospital for the poor. Although the original church no longer exists, the location remained important to the community. In 1882, the older building was demolished, and by 1912, a new project had begun under architect Luis Bellido.
Bellido designed the church with a Latin cross layout, including a dome and several side chapels. Construction finished in 1915, reviving the church’s role as a spiritual center. Unlike many historic churches, San Juan el Real also holds political relevance. In 1923, Francisco Franco chose this church for his wedding, linking it to Spain’s modern history.
As the church approached its centennial, its importance was formally recognized. In 2014, Pope Francis elevated it to the status of a minor basilica. This change honored both its religious value and its historical significance in the region.
Today, the Basilica of San Juan el Real continues to serve a thriving parish community. It offers regular Masses, draws pilgrims, and welcomes visitors interested in its rich legacy. Locals also take pride in its role as a living symbol of faith and tradition.
Because of its architectural beauty, historical depth, and religious purpose, the basilica remains one of Oviedo’s most treasured landmarks. It stands as a lasting witness to centuries of devotion, community, and spiritual heritage in northern Spain.
