The Roman Catholic parish and collegiate church of St. Martin and Kastulus, also called Martinskirche, is a Basilica Minor. Construction began around 1385, led by master builder Hans Krumenauer, who designed the church as a hall church. By 1500, the church was completed, with significant work by Hans von Burghausen. The church features a Gothic style, blending High and Late Gothic elements. It stands as one of the most important Gothic buildings in southern Germany.
The church’s tower is the tallest brick tower in the world, measuring 130.1 meters (427 feet). It is also the tallest church tower in Bavaria. This height and the church's vertical design make it an iconic part of Landshut’s skyline.
The church had a crucial role in the religious life of the area. In 1598, Duke Wilhelm V moved the collegiate chapter of Moosburg to Landshut. The chapter was based at St. Martin’s Church until it was dissolved in 1803. Despite this, the church remained an active religious center for the community.
In 1937, Pope Pius XI re-established the collegiate chapter at the request of Cardinal Faulhaber. Today, St. Martin’s Church is a significant landmark, drawing visitors for its historical importance and architectural beauty. Its status as a Basilica Minor highlights its continuing role in the spiritual and cultural life of the region.
