The National Shrine Basilica of Saint Rose of Lima stands at the corner of Belgrano Avenue and Pasco Street in the Balvanera neighborhood of Buenos Aires. It serves as both a sacred temple and a national symbol of Argentina’s Catholic devotion. Since Saint Rose of Lima is the patron saint of the country’s independence, the idea of building a shrine in her honor began in 1926. Furthermore, Christophersen found inspiration in the Cathedral of Saint Front in Périgueux, France. That structure had also influenced Paul Abadie when he designed the Sacré-Cœur Basilica in Paris. Consequently, the Buenos Aires sanctuary united European artistry with Argentine religious identity.
Finally, the basilica opened on October 12, 1934, during the 32nd International Eucharistic Congress in Buenos Aires. On that occasion, thousands of faithful joined together in celebration. In addition, Church and civic leaders praised the temple as a monument to unity and devotion. A commemorative shield beside the altar still honors that event.
