St. Margareta is a Catholic parish church located in Düsseldorf-Gerresheim. Originally, it served as the collegiate church for the Gerresheim Women’s Foundation, a religious institution established in the 9th century. This foundation was one of the oldest canoness convents in the Archdiocese of Cologne. For centuries, the basilica provided a place of worship for the women of the foundation and the surrounding community.
In 1803, significant changes occurred when the foundation dissolved. Despite these changes, St. Margareta continued to serve as an important religious and historical landmark. On January 1, 2011, the parish boundaries expanded. St. Margareta’s parish merged with those of St. Cäcilia, St. Katharina, St. Maria vom Frieden, St. Reinold, and St. Ursula. This expansion aimed to better serve the growing community in the eastern part of Düsseldorf.
Today, St. Margareta stands as a center of worship and spiritual life. It continues to offer a space for reflection, prayer, and community gatherings. The church is not only a religious center but also a symbol of the region’s rich cultural and architectural history. Its role in the community has only strengthened over the years, adapting to the changing needs of its parishioners.
St. Margareta remains an essential part of the Düsseldorf-Gerresheim community. It represents both the area’s deep historical roots and its evolving future. The church’s continued significance shows how deeply it is woven into the fabric of local life.
