The Sanctuary of São Bento da Porta Aberta lies in Rio Caldo, Terras de Bouro, Portugal. It began in 1615. A small chapel was built. Then, it grew. By the end of the 19th century, a larger temple was started. Construction began in 1880. It finished in 1895.
The name São Bento da Porta Aberta means "Saint Benedict of the Open Door." The chapel keeps its doors open. This tradition welcomes travelers. Pilgrims rest here. It continues today.
In 1998, a new crypt opened. It was much larger. Architect Luís Cunha designed it. The crypt stands beside the temple. More pilgrims can fit now.
In 2013, the chapel received changes. The ambo level improved. Lighting was added. The space became brighter. It serves the faithful better.
2.5 million pilgrims visit every year. This makes it the second-largest site in Portugal. Fátima is the largest. Despite its remote location, pilgrims still come.
In 2015, Pope Francis declared it a minor basilica. This celebrated its 400th anniversary. The church’s role in the community continues.
The sanctuary celebrates key dates. These include March 21st, July 11th, and August 10th to 15th. Pilgrims gather for these.
The Brotherhood of Saint Benedict of the Open Door seeks recognition. They aim for inclusion in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

If you’re traveling from Braga, it’s about 40 km to Rio Caldo via EN103 road, which takes about 45 minutes. Regular bus services connect Porto and Braga to Rio Caldo, and the nearest bus stations are located in these cities, offering easy access to the sanctuary.
